Keeping a Fabric Sample Journal
By Trish Doornbosch

When you are involved in creating your own fabric designs for art quilts, wearable art, or embellishment on ready-to-wear clothing, you may find it hard to remember what works and what doesn't. That's when having a fabric journal pays off. Just like a writer's journal or an artist's sketchbook, a fabric sample journal is the place to explore designs and techniques and serves as a creative reference tool.

Start with a couple of yards of pure white, 100% cotton fabric. Wash in hot water and dry without using fabric softener. The pre-wash takes care of any fabric finishes applied by the manufacturer and will pre-shrink the fabric. Then cut the yardage into small sample sizes, either six inch or eight inch squares work best.

Find out which of your stamps and stencils give you the best results. Gather up all your stamps and stencils and clean them off if you used them for other craft projects. Using low-cost fabric paints, use a different repeat design on each sample or use a combination of stamps and stencils on your sample squares. Try different color combinations e.g. one-color, two-color, all shades of one color, warm colors, cool colors, etc.

Preview fabric dyeing techniques. Shibori are tie-dye or bound resist techniques including folding and gathering, tight running stitches in either straight lines or patterns, and fabric tied to a pole. Resists for dyeing include wax, as in batik, flour paste and washable school glue (cold water dyes or paints only), and gutta or paint resist which stay on the fabric and are used with fabric paints to stop the color from bleeding from one area to another.

Make mini-samplers. Try out your hand embroidery stitches and techniques by making mini-samplers. Reinforce the cotton fabric squares with lightweight fusible interfacing ironed on the back and you won't need an embroidery hoop.

Once you have a pile of samples, arrange them by technique or by color. You can tie them together at one edge as in book form, or clip a small hole in the top left corner and thread them onto a metal O ring found at office supply stores.

To create the most informative sample journal, mount each sample on a piece of poster board cut to ring file binder size. Write down details, such as the name of the technique or stitch, which dyes or paints were used, and any problems or successes you had with a specific resist.

Keeping a fabric journal helps you remember which fabric surface design techniques you like and which ones you might want to improve.

Tie-Dye Cupcakes - The Semi-Homemade Way
By Barb Sibbing

Tie-Dye History

Tie-dye as we know it became popular in the United States around the mid-1950. People used dying methods with either "natural" or store dyes randomly folding, twisting, and tying fabric or clothing. The items were then either dipped or put into a dye bath. The results were simple and had varied designs; but they were not vibrant and tended to fade far too quickly. Still, everybody loved them!

Tie-dye became all the rage during the Vietnam War period when people craved peace and freedom. It was a form of artistic expression as well as protest for the hippie, psychedelic generation who were free-spirited and very uninhibited during this difficult time in American history.

These artistic peace-lovers embellished t-shirts, curtains, tapestries, pants, and anything that they could think of that would proclaim their individuality! This made people happy then, as it still does today! It has remained the utmost symbol of the sixties! And, in all of its forms, tie-dye is not only an art of fabric, but a piece of our world history.

Tie-Dye Cupcakes Recipe

1 White or Yellow Cake Mix box
1 Can White Frosting or Buttercream Frosting
Food Coloring ~ your choice of color

Follow the directions on the back of the cake mix box. After you have mixed the batter, separate the batter into five cereal bowls. Add a few drops of the food coloring at a time to get the color you are wanting. You can always add more color if needed.

Put cupcake papers into the cupcake tins. Add the small amount of each batter into the cupcake paper. You can add the different colors in layers to begin. You can be creative here as much as you want because there is no wrong way to do this.

After all the colorful batter has been added to the cupcake papers you now here comes the fun! Take a tooth pick and swirl the Tie-Dye batter around in each cupcake tin. Be careful not to mix too much or you will have a not so pretty look to the cupcakes.

Bake the cupcakes according to the package. Take out of the oven and cool.

Tie-Dye Frosting

Take your canned frosting and put some into small bowls and add your food coloring to the frosting. This time I would only pick three different colors. Mix each color to get the entire food coloring mixed.

Take one color at a time and layer in into a pastry bag. After layering all the frosting, carefully take a knife and swirl the frosting.

Now swirl the frosting onto the cupcakes with the pastry bag.

If you don't have a pastry bag here's another way to do the frosting. Use white or buttercream on top of the cupcake and you can get little tubes of color frosting or separate frosting into small bowls then use food coloring in each bowl, stir to mix. Then take the color frosting and squirt a circle all the way around the cupcake, do 3 to 4 colors and then take a toothpick and just swirl all the colors around to make it look tie-dyed.

Now eat and enjoy!

These great cupcakes are great for any occasion and for any age!

Or are you a hippie who just misses the old days of tie-dye?

How to Make a Tie-Dye Shirt in 12 Simple Steps
By Mathew Dunn

Have you ever wondered how to make tie-dye shirt? Here is how with this easy to follow step by step guide. You'll be styling your very own homemade shirt before you know it! You will need the following materials;

o 2 or 3 different color dyes
o Squeeze bottle
o White T-shirt
o Soda ash
o Rubber bands
o Optional: tie-dye kit(should include everything)

1. Get out your bottle to mix the dye. A mustard or mayonnaise bottle would be perfect for the job. Pour the dye concentrate into the bottle and add water. Shake it really well and let it sit. Note: some dye may already come in a bottle and no mixing will be required.

2. Now, get out your white T-shirt and soak it in water. Be sure to wring it out really good, you want it to be damp not dripping. Lay it out across a flat surface and place your finger in the middle of your shirt. This is going to be the center of your spiral.

3. Keep your finger in the center and begin to twist the shirt around your finger. Make sure that the shirt stays flat on the surface. Continue twisting the shirt until it is all wound up. It should be about three to five inches tall.

4. Now you're going to wrap up your wadded T-shirt with some rubber bands, about three or four should do it. (Make sure you space them out evenly).

5. Go to the kitchen sink, plug the bottom and fill it up with water. Add a decent amount of soda ash to the water. Stir the water for a few minutes and allow the soda ash to mix.

6. Place the shirt in the sink and Leave it submerged in the soda ash solution for about twenty minutes to a half hour. Go find something awesome to do and come back later.

7. When the time is up go back to the kitchen and remove the shirt. Give it a real good twist to squeeze out all of the water. Be sure not to rinse it out.

8. Now, go back to your flat surface and lay down some type of plastic. This is the messy part. In my experience a trash bag works pretty well. Get out your bottles full of dye and start applying it to your shirt. You don't want any white to show so color in the whole thing. Don't forget about mixing colors to your desire!

9. Find another trash bag and cover your shirt up for the next 24 hours.

10. After a full day the colors will have stained the shirt. Run the shirt under warm water until the water is clear and all of the excess dye has been rinsed out.

11. Now it is time to remove the rubber bands holding your shirt together and marvel at the masterpiece you have created!

12. Once you've rinsed it thoroughly by hand. Place the shirt and only the shirt in the washer for twenty minutes with warm water. After that throw it in the dryer and you now have one awesome shirt that is your own work of art! Now you know how to make a tie-dye shirt and can share this fun with anyone.

Life is what you make it, stay positive and moving forward.
Peace & Love,
Matt
