Cool Tie Dye Designs- Keeping a Fabric Sample Journal

Keeping a Fabric Sample Journal
By Trish Doornbosch

When you are involved in creating your own fabric designs for art quilts, wearable art, or embellishment on ready-to-wear clothing, you may find it hard to remember what works and what doesn't. That's when having a fabric journal pays off. Just like a writer's journal or an artist's sketchbook, a fabric sample journal is the place to explore designs and techniques and serves as a creative reference tool.

Start with a couple of yards of pure white, 100% cotton fabric. Wash in hot water and dry without using fabric softener. The pre-wash takes care of any fabric finishes applied by the manufacturer and will pre-shrink the fabric. Then cut the yardage into small sample sizes, either six inch or eight inch squares work best.

Find out which of your stamps and stencils give you the best results. Gather up all your stamps and stencils and clean them off if you used them for other craft projects. Using low-cost fabric paints, use a different repeat design on each sample or use a combination of stamps and stencils on your sample squares. Try different color combinations e.g. one-color, two-color, all shades of one color, warm colors, cool colors, etc.

Preview fabric dyeing techniques. Shibori are tie-dye or bound resist techniques including folding and gathering, tight running stitches in either straight lines or patterns, and fabric tied to a pole. Resists for dyeing include wax, as in batik, flour paste and washable school glue (cold water dyes or paints only), and gutta or paint resist which stay on the fabric and are used with fabric paints to stop the color from bleeding from one area to another.

Make mini-samplers. Try out your hand embroidery stitches and techniques by making mini-samplers. Reinforce the cotton fabric squares with lightweight fusible interfacing ironed on the back and you won't need an embroidery hoop.

Once you have a pile of samples, arrange them by technique or by color. You can tie them together at one edge as in book form, or clip a small hole in the top left corner and thread them onto a metal O ring found at office supply stores.

To create the most informative sample journal, mount each sample on a piece of poster board cut to ring file binder size. Write down details, such as the name of the technique or stitch, which dyes or paints were used, and any problems or successes you had with a specific resist.

Keeping a fabric journal helps you remember which fabric surface design techniques you like and which ones you might want to improve.

Tie-Dye Cupcakes - The Semi-Homemade Way
By Barb Sibbing

Tie-Dye History

Tie-dye as we know it became popular in the United States around the mid-1950. People used dying methods with either "natural" or store dyes randomly folding, twisting, and tying fabric or clothing. The items were then either dipped or put into a dye bath. The results were simple and had varied designs; but they were not vibrant and tended to fade far too quickly. Still, everybody loved them!

Tie-dye became all the rage during the Vietnam War period when people craved peace and freedom. It was a form of artistic expression as well as protest for the hippie, psychedelic generation who were free-spirited and very uninhibited during this difficult time in American history.

These artistic peace-lovers embellished t-shirts, curtains, tapestries, pants, and anything that they could think of that would proclaim their individuality! This made people happy then, as it still does today! It has remained the utmost symbol of the sixties! And, in all of its forms, tie-dye is not only an art of fabric, but a piece of our world history.

Tie-Dye Cupcakes Recipe

1 White or Yellow Cake Mix box
1 Can White Frosting or Buttercream Frosting
Food Coloring ~ your choice of color

Follow the directions on the back of the cake mix box. After you have mixed the batter, separate the batter into five cereal bowls. Add a few drops of the food coloring at a time to get the color you are wanting. You can always add more color if needed.

Put cupcake papers into the cupcake tins. Add the small amount of each batter into the cupcake paper. You can add the different colors in layers to begin. You can be creative here as much as you want because there is no wrong way to do this.

After all the colorful batter has been added to the cupcake papers you now here comes the fun! Take a tooth pick and swirl the Tie-Dye batter around in each cupcake tin. Be careful not to mix too much or you will have a not so pretty look to the cupcakes.

Bake the cupcakes according to the package. Take out of the oven and cool.

Tie-Dye Frosting

Take your canned frosting and put some into small bowls and add your food coloring to the frosting. This time I would only pick three different colors. Mix each color to get the entire food coloring mixed.

Take one color at a time and layer in into a pastry bag. After layering all the frosting, carefully take a knife and swirl the frosting.

Now swirl the frosting onto the cupcakes with the pastry bag.

If you don't have a pastry bag here's another way to do the frosting. Use white or buttercream on top of the cupcake and you can get little tubes of color frosting or separate frosting into small bowls then use food coloring in each bowl, stir to mix. Then take the color frosting and squirt a circle all the way around the cupcake, do 3 to 4 colors and then take a toothpick and just swirl all the colors around to make it look tie-dyed.

Now eat and enjoy!

These great cupcakes are great for any occasion and for any age!

Or are you a hippie who just misses the old days of tie-dye?

How to Make a Tie-Dye Shirt in 12 Simple Steps
By Mathew Dunn

Have you ever wondered how to make tie-dye shirt? Here is how with this easy to follow step by step guide. You'll be styling your very own homemade shirt before you know it! You will need the following materials;

o 2 or 3 different color dyes
o Squeeze bottle
o White T-shirt
o Soda ash
o Rubber bands
o Optional: tie-dye kit(should include everything)

1. Get out your bottle to mix the dye. A mustard or mayonnaise bottle would be perfect for the job. Pour the dye concentrate into the bottle and add water. Shake it really well and let it sit. Note: some dye may already come in a bottle and no mixing will be required.

2. Now, get out your white T-shirt and soak it in water. Be sure to wring it out really good, you want it to be damp not dripping. Lay it out across a flat surface and place your finger in the middle of your shirt. This is going to be the center of your spiral.

3. Keep your finger in the center and begin to twist the shirt around your finger. Make sure that the shirt stays flat on the surface. Continue twisting the shirt until it is all wound up. It should be about three to five inches tall.

4. Now you're going to wrap up your wadded T-shirt with some rubber bands, about three or four should do it. (Make sure you space them out evenly).

5. Go to the kitchen sink, plug the bottom and fill it up with water. Add a decent amount of soda ash to the water. Stir the water for a few minutes and allow the soda ash to mix.

6. Place the shirt in the sink and Leave it submerged in the soda ash solution for about twenty minutes to a half hour. Go find something awesome to do and come back later.

7. When the time is up go back to the kitchen and remove the shirt. Give it a real good twist to squeeze out all of the water. Be sure not to rinse it out.

8. Now, go back to your flat surface and lay down some type of plastic. This is the messy part. In my experience a trash bag works pretty well. Get out your bottles full of dye and start applying it to your shirt. You don't want any white to show so color in the whole thing. Don't forget about mixing colors to your desire!

9. Find another trash bag and cover your shirt up for the next 24 hours.

10. After a full day the colors will have stained the shirt. Run the shirt under warm water until the water is clear and all of the excess dye has been rinsed out.

11. Now it is time to remove the rubber bands holding your shirt together and marvel at the masterpiece you have created!

12. Once you've rinsed it thoroughly by hand. Place the shirt and only the shirt in the washer for twenty minutes with warm water. After that throw it in the dryer and you now have one awesome shirt that is your own work of art! Now you know how to make a tie-dye shirt and can share this fun with anyone.

Life is what you make it, stay positive and moving forward.
Peace & Love,
Matt

Tie Dying With The Masses - How To Group Tie Dye In The Classroom-Summer Camp-Or For Parties!
By Thomas Smith

I've loved tie dying ever since I dipped tightly rubber banded t-shirts into tubs of Rit Dye in elementary school. The colors and patterns were magical, but the fun part was wearing my creation!

Several years later and I was in The Brightside Tie Dye Emporium in Brattleboro, VT. Upon checking out with a bag of goodies, I noticed a small sign that announced that the owner was running a class in tie dying. I signed up immediately and soon learned the mysteries of making eye catching, non-fading t-shirts in myriads of colors and patterns. Beyond using the information to create pieces to sell at local farmer's markets, I also used it in school and summer camp so that kids could make delightful pieces of their own. The pride they showed when wearing shirts they made themselves was justified. They were truly gorgeous.

I'm about to describe the method I used with the groups of kids. I'm sure there are different and better ways, but this worked great for me. The dyes to use are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes. I always bought mine as a dry powder so that the dye would have a much longer shelf life. If you want to do this on a limited scale, try buying three or so colors. Remember, the colors can be mixed! Dyes, chemicals, and squirt bottles can be bought from the source given at the bottom of the article, though there are several other purveyors, too. Pro just happened to be the company I used. They also sell small booklets detailing how to create certain designs are are well worth the few dollars they cost. Any other materials may be purchased at the local Wal-Mart, K-Mart, or grocery store. The key is that I wanted the shirts to be non-fading and last a long, long, long time. If fading is not an issue, Rit Dyes are far less expensive and much easier to use. If you want to create something that will be regularly worn and still stunning three years from now, here's the deal...

Here is our method for group tie dying. It's a lot of work, so roll up those sleeves and enlist the parent volunteers!

1) Buy the shirts on sale. We get Large and Xlarge for sixth graders. I do not take pride into account when we do shirts. No one that I've met wants a shirt that looks like Spandex! I put several mothers in 4XL, and though they said they would use them for sleep shirts, they sure looked comfortable!

2) You will now need to wash the shirts to remove any grease that was left on the threads from processing. Wash shirts in HOT water with ¼ cup of washing soda or Pro-Dye Activator and ¼ cup of Synthrapol. Rinse on COLD. Dry shirts

3) Put a different number on the tag of each shirt in permanent marker.

4) Make a solution of 5 gallons of tap water to 3 cups of soda ash or Pro-Dye Activator. You will need four or five batches of this in one tub. I use my large sink for this. Add the shirts; up to 18 at a time, and let sit in the solution for 15 minutes. Wearing rubber gloves, squeeze out and put in washer. Set washer to final spin, and spin with no water coming into tub for rinse. Place shirts in a garbage bag to prevent them from drying.

5) Mix dyes with distilled water up to one week before dying. To one quart of distilled water in an old blender, add the following:

¼ cup of dye

Fuschia

Bright Orange

Golden Yellow

Deep Purple

Raspberry (reddish purple)

½ cup of dye

Turquoise (FOAMS!)

Kelly Green

Cobalt Blue (FOAMS!)

1 cup of dye

Better Black

6) Store the dyes in squirt bottles and clean milk jugs.

7) Keep folded shirts on a "grid table" when dying.

8) Wrap shirts in seran wrap. Get this from a kitchen / restaurant supply firm.

9) Let shirts sit wrapped for two days.

10) While filling washer (top loading only), take rubber bands off clothes (wear rubber gloves) and toss in washer (12 - 18). Wash and rinse on cold. Then wash on HOT with ¼ cup of synthrapol and rinse cold. Dry in drier.

11) Wash with dark clothes the first few times, but shirt will be colorfast.

Dyes and supplies are available from Pro Chemical and Dye Company of Somerset, MA.

Have fun!

Hippie Tattoos - Here Are Today's Top Hippie Tattoo Designs
By Mark S Myers

Hippie Tattoos are making a comeback today. If you are looking for creative, unique tattoos you may want to consider these top Hippie Tattoo designs and ideas.

Lest we forget the term, hippies refers to a group of youth during the 1960's who embraced a cultural lifestyle unlike any before. The hippie movement was born during a time of political unrest and rebellion. Protest marches, burning bras and flower power were all parts of this "make love not war" subculture.

Hippies rebelled against anything that represented established institutions. They were against the Vietnam War and their motto was to live a life of freedom, love and peace.

They set themselves apart in their look and they way they spoke.

Bellbottom jeans were the style, the more torn and frayed the better. Tie dye shirts were all the rage. They wore sandals at best, but preferred bare feet. Love beads, head bands, granny glasses, ankle bells, crocheted hats and belts were also parts of the lifestyle.

Hippie tattoos today represent all of that 60's culture and movement. Popular hippie tattoo designs today include: peace symbols, the peace hand gesture, yellow smiley face circles, tie dye psychedelic swirl designs, flowers (especially daisies), and butterflies.

Some people looking for unique hippy tattoos prefer slogans that were representative of that era. Some more popular hippie sayings that make great tattoos include:

Groovy
Hip
Far out
Peace
Love
Dig it
Make love not war
Flower Power
Give Peace a chance
Right On
Power to the people
Free love
Go with the flow
Without hope we have nothing
TTOW (that's the only way)
Flowers are a girls best friend

The inside of the wrist seems to be one of the most popular locations for hippie sayings to be tattooed. Other locations where these hippie quotes are being placed are on the lower regions of the back just above the hips.

Cool Tie Dye Designs- Pick the Right Fabric

Editors Note: I have scoured the internet gathering up some great articles on some Cool Tie Dye Designs. Although, these are written instructions, I will be posting some of my personal video tutorials very soon. But for now, I hope these articles by various authors at Ezine Articles, should give you some insight to what the art of tie dye is all about. And how you can achieve some amazing results, and most importantly just have fun! after all that's what tie dye is all about, getting together with family & friends and throwing down a fun filled Tie Dye Party creating unique works of art.

Tie Dye Fabric - Pick the Right Fabric
By G. Smitty

Striking colors and patterned prints illustrate a tie dye fabric. This fabric is good for making skirts, scarves, shirts, pants, dresses, beddings, curtains, and pillowcases. It gives a colorful and casual look to the garment. Earlier this kind of fabric was associated with hippies. Now it has been widely accepted by common people. Even designers use this fabric to display their style and creativity.

Tie dye is a technique used to resist colors on the fabric. You should tie the fabric at various places depending on the design you wish to create. The pattern in which you fold the material is of great significance. This is because it determines the design on the final product. Selection of colors is the other important point.

You could create such a fabric at home with great ease. No special skills are necessary. You only need to either buy a tie dye kit or get the various materials and do it on your own. It is a complete fun-filled activity where you can make use of your imagination and be very creative.

Universal appeal

Different methods for creating tie dye fabric are available worldwide. In Japan, they use this technique for making kimonos. Africa has its own method to create such fabrics. In West Africa, indigo dyed fabrics are very famous. The embroidery pattern created on this fabric enhances its beauty. These kinds of fabrics have uses such as for bed linen, furnishings and garments.

Tie Dye Pattern

In simple words, the tie dye process prevents dye to reach all areas of the fabric by crumpling and tying it up. This ensures the formation of the designs since the dyes do not reach all areas. Depending on how the fabric is folded several patterns could result. If you surf the Internet, you will come across various sites that will explain the methods in which you can fold the fabric to get designs. There are even video demonstrations that will teach you the entire process. You can also get help from several books that are available on tie dye.

Online Fabrics

Apart from creating the design, you could also look at the variety of fabrics available online. If you go through the websites, you will be able to compare the various prices and offers the vendors are giving you. There are photos of the fabrics that will give you an idea as to how the fabric looks and what garments you could design from it.

The companies even ship the fabrics depending on your requirement. You must do thorough research before placing an order. If possible, you must read all the customer reviews and feedback. These will help you in getting a clear idea about the fabric, designs and trustworthiness of the supplier.

The rel=nofollow tie dye fabric that you use to create designs at home must ideally be a self-absorbent fabric, which is a good recipient of colors and dyes. Normally cotton, linen and naturally woven fabrics are ideal for tie dye. Silk is a good tie and dye fabric as well. Synthetic fibers do not absorb the color well.

Cool Tie Dye Designs- Goodbye Tie Dye

Editors Note: I have scoured the internet gathering up some great articles on some Cool Tie Dye Designs. Although, these are written instructions, I will be posting some of my personal video tutorials very soon. But for now, I hope these articles by various authors at Ezine Articles, should give you some insight to what the art of tie dye is all about. And how you can achieve some amazing results, and most importantly just have fun! after all that's what tie dye is all about, getting together with family & friends and throwing down a fun filled Tie Dye Party creating unique works of art.

Goodbye Tie-Dye
By Mary Michaels

Tie-dyed blouses or shirts could be associated with the "hippie" style of the early 70s as popularized by some music icons of that time. It was made popular in several countries all over the world. The popularity was easily gained as it was trendy and the looks can be achieved easily from simple to more complex processes.
Tie-dyeing uses bright colors and different dyeing methods in order to achieve the patterned designs in clothing. The basic tie-dye process can be done at home by applying different colors of dye on folded or knotted cloth. When the cloth absorbed the dye already, it is then set off to dry. Patterned lines and designs can be accomplished upon removing the knots after drying. The patterns made by the tie-dyeing process can be seen as a very appealing work of art. Changing the direction of the knots or twisting the material towards one direction could easily tweak the resulting pattern.
There are also other complex methods used by professionals in combining colors, applying dye and making more unique patterns. Different shapes and color combinations are achieved by using non-typical folds and patterns. The designs could also be further accented by rich embroideries or accessories.
As it is associated with bright colors and asymmetric designs, clothes that are tie-dyed are usually worn during the summer season. It is also for this reason that it is more widely used in tropical countries. Shirts and accessories made up from this process can be seen more often in beaches or summer picnics. Aside from colors, the materials that are usually tie-dyed are cotton. Clothes made up of cotton are worn during warm weather. And tie-dyed clothes commonly comes as a day-time shirt or shawl.
But in the middle of other high fashion styles, of flair and glamour, would there still be a place for tie-dyed materials?
As with other fashion styles, tie-dyeing can die slowly as time goes by. Other modern methods in accenting clothes are now being introduced. Too much colors on one attire is no longer eye-pleasing for the present day fashion. In contrast to the numerous bright colors and busy patterns of tie-dyed clothes, what is more popular now are plain black or white. Women would then just accessorized with gold or silver jewelries, belts, shoes and bags. While men's common dark suit could easily be concluded with a bow or tie and often cufflinks for added elegance.
Even casual wears have changed in trends and slowly adopted the monotonous white and black combination. Though some bright colors are still considered stylish like green, yellow, purple are red, they usually come in one-color dresses and no too-busy designs. Simplicity, clarity and cleanliness direct the current theme of fashion.
But even if modern fashion style would be bidding goodbye to tie-dyed clothes, surely this would be only for a short time. Because fashion has never said goodbye to any style permanently. The designs come and go and after several decades, they will come again with different packaging. So if you have tie-dyed clothes that you have not been able to wear for quite some time, just keep it on your closet. You will never know when you are going to use it just yet.

Mary Michaels invites you to take a look at the latest cufflinks offered at CanadaCufflinks.ca. Specialists in wedding cufflinks, men's unique gifts and accessories - you're certain to find something to your liking.
